Portland: Number One for Walking

Prevention magazine named Portland America’s best city for walking. While this sort of ranking is designed to sell magazines, the study was done jointly with the American Podiatric Medical Association, so it has some validity.

April’s issue of Prevention listed America’s top 10 cities for walking, and we’re thrilled that Portland is number one for both biking (according to March’s Bicycling magazine) and walking. The two issues are interconnected, as walkers and bicyclists feel similar impacts of street design, transportation funding decisions, and social attitudes, and the BTA has often worked with others to co-promote walking and biking, such as through our Safe Routes to School efforts.

Congratulations to our friends at the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition, who have been advocating for walking in the region for years!
