When most people get a new job, they fill out a W-2, set a start date, find out where to park, and then decide the most important thing of all: what to wear on their first day of work. But this is no ordinary job, so when BTA boss Evan Manvel offered me this job, I jumped up and down a few times, scheduled a two-week vacation to Mexico, and then ran down into my basement to pass a critical eye over my bike.

It was filthy. It was squeaky. The front tire was rubbing its fender. Holes in my seat, fraying handlebar tape, a bent presta valve…this was the bike I was going to hang on the wall at BTA headquarters on my first day? No way. It needed a new outfit. Badly.
So for my first day on the job, I bought new handlebar tape. Bright red. Dress for success!
