THANK YOU to the folks who helped out on Saturday by working on dozens of kids’ mountain bikes used in BTA’s Bicycle Safety Education and Pedal Power programs. We set up shop in a basement-storage space where our bike fleets live during the non-teaching months. Volunteers from diverse bike/mechanical backgrounds including Bike Gallery, PSU Bike Cooperative, OBRA, bike-commuting, and Horizon Air (yes, a jet mechanic) helped by checking the bikes over for loose bolts and adjusting brakes, gears and hubs. We tuned-up about 60 bikes and had a fun time conversing and getting to know each other. Three mechanics’ sons were present to help with the test-riding, bike shuffling and even some wrenching.
If you’re mechanically adept and missed the fun, not to worry. We have another 60 bikes that need tuning! Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 19th for the second round. Drop-in between 9:00 and 4:00 to help out. For location and other information, contact Anna Scalera, Youth Programs Coordinator at anna@bta4bikes.org or 503.226.0676 x19.
