The results of the Portland Auditor’s Annual Neighborhood Survey are out. Not surprisingly, fewer than half of Portlanders rate their neighborhood traffic speed as “good” or “very good.” The results are similar to the rankings of neighborhood biking safety — fewer than half of Portlanders think it’s “good” or “very good.” Southwest Portlanders seem particularly concerned.
Also review the 2004-05 Auditor’s report. Check out especially pages 37 and 38. In 2004, over 5000 auto drivers and passengers were injured, while 174 bicyclists were injured. That translates roughly to our mode split — if we presume 3% of trips by bike (data are hard to come by because bicycling is not comprehensively measured and varies through the year). Portland’s increasing number of bicycle trips is also an impressive chart (page 38), especially compared with our relatively meager increases in daily vehicle miles travelled.
