Reminder: Speak Up for Bikes This Week!

Deadline Approaching to Support Increased Funding for Bike Projects

Two critical transportation funding processes are drawing to a close on November 30th and December 1st. The next week is the last opportunity for folks to show their support for biking improvements around the metro area and statewide.

Every two years the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) selects a set of Transportation Enhancement (TE) projects. The TE program is Oregon’s primary source for off-street bike trail funding. This time, ODOT has $11 million for two years.

This popular program is very competitive. Bike trails compete against other non-highway projects. You can help push for a great project in your community and increase the overall number of trails funded through the program.

LETTER TEMPLATE

Dear Patricia Fisher / TE Selection Committee:

I am writing to express my strong support for the Transportation Enhancements program in Oregon. As a bicyclist and walker, I recognize that the TE program is a primary funding source for great multiuse trail and bicycle projects statewide.

I believe that the popular TE program should work towards completing a statewide network of multiuse paths, scenic bikeways, and bicycle boulevards by committing the majority of the program to these purposes. As you know, trails and bicycling are great for spurring tourism, economic and downtown redevelopment. Bicycling is also a healthy, safe, convenient, and affordable way for people of all ages to travel.

I also writing to support project “X. This project is a cost effective way to achieve the following goals:
1.
2.
3.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours truly,

The public comment period closes on November 30, 2006 and final project selection will take place in January 2007.
