Last Week and This Week: Local and Statewide

Last week was a big advocacy week. The bicycling community discussed, acted, and cheered at the City of Portland budget process. Also in Salem, Friday was a big day as the Vulnerable Roadway User bill passed the House floor.

When I look forward, an energizing week means that we have a lot more work ahead. In Salem we are working to schedule the Pedestrian Hand Signal bill for a public hearing and work session in the House Judiciary Committee. We are trying to wake up our 3-foot passing bill from its deep coma. We are trying to increase funding for bicycle Velodrome racing tracks, tourism, and bike paths.

In Portland we have to decide how hard to push for the $150,000 bicycle safety funds and keep our energy. We will track the Portland Bicycle Master Plan program; the Boulevard Campaign is moving forward. Our Biking Vikings – A PSU group supporting the project – are due to complete their North and Northeast Portland route-finding research soon (take a survey). We are pushing for continually strong Safe Routes to Schools and our new Safe Routes Director will begin this week. Other small campaigns and testimonials keep on surfacing.

It’s a big bike week. Here’s a couple of public events going on this week:
