In mid-July I’ll be heading to Central Oregon to present a Bike Safety Education Training session with our good friends at Commute Options.
Friday evening and all day Saturday will be dedicated to a training seminar that provides the opportunity to brush up on skills and gain knowledge to train youth cyclists. This is valuable for anyone interested in becoming a bike safety instructor, volunteering for bike safety education classes or hoping to gain experience with bike safety for their own friends and family.
I’m excited about this opportunity since it’s my first training seminar that I will faciliate (well actually, Scott Bricker, our Policy Director will be with me since I still sort of have training wheels on and he developed the program back in the day). I’m also looking forward to meeting all the Central Oregon bikey people since we have such a unique and valuable relationship with our friends at Commute Options in Bend. They are a success story as far as the goal of sustainability when it comes to providing bike safety education throughout Oregon. Ultimately the BTA hopes to play the role of providing education and encouragement services and assistance for Safe Routes to School throughout the state. But in order to grow these types of programs communities have to find their own path to sustainability and Bend is a wonderful example of this model.
The training seminar runs Friday, July 27 from 6 – 8:30pm and Saturday, July 28 from 9am – 4pm at Commute Options for Central Oregon, 155 NW Irving Avenue, in Bend.
