Tour de Fat raises thousands of dollars for bike advocacy

This past weekend, New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat rolled through town. They brought great musical acts, a bushel of costumes to loan out, acrobats and stunt bikes and a trailer full of beer along with them.

The event benefited the BTA and Portland United Mountain Pedalers. PUMP managed all the merchandise sales, and the BTA managed beer sales, and each group got to keep the proceeds!

This event brought in more than $8,000 for the BTA’s ongoing bike advocacy and education work.

Many people made this a great event, besides PUMP and the BTA and all the staff and performers.

Thanks to New Belgium for coming up with an event that promotes their product (beer) and our product (biking) and manages to also be a total blast at the same time!

Thanks very much to the volunteers who made this possible! They diligently checked ID’s, sold tokens, and kept the taps flowing for bike revelers.

Also thanks to whoever made the Waterfront Park seawall a giant bike rack.

And to the BTA Safe Routes team for running the helmet decorating booth!

This is one of my favorite events all year long, even despite the fact that I spend all six hours plus more hours on both ends running around like a headless chicken. I’m sorry it’s over – I’d do it again next weekend if I could! Can’t wait for next year

Oh, and if you accidentally donated your Toyota to the BTA by leaving your car key on the ground, and you’d like to change your mind, we can help.
