Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams has proposed the largest program for funding safety and maintenance of the City’s streets in its history. This program will have a dramatic effect on catching up on an ever-increasing backlog of street maintenance and safety issues. The BTA is working with Commissioner Adams to support his “Safe and Sound Streets” program.
The polling results have indicated strong support amongst the public for safety improvements, including Bicycle Boulevards. We are working with a coalition of organizations to increase the amount of money in the package for critical safety improvements.
Over the next month, Commissioner Adams will be holding a series of town hall meetings to get more public input on his proposal. This is your chance to weigh in on this vital issue. We encourage you to attend one of the meetings listed below and voice your support for the package and for increasing the amount of money for safety improvements.
Visit Sam’s web page or call (503) 823-1394 for more information. You can also download a PDF about the meetings here.

In regards to the article in the Oregonian this morning, this website was listed to e-mail comments regarding bike safety. I agree that both motorists and byclists should be aware of one another, However: byclists should also share the expense of bike lanes, etc. by having to license their bikes and show proof of insurance the same as motorists. They want the same rules as cars and trucks, then let them play by the same rules. Maybe they will also have respect for cars as we should have for them.
