The BTA donated 20 bikes from its original bike safety fleet to the Harriet Tubman Leadership Academy for Young Women this month. Mostly medium and large sized bikes, they will be used by the new school to facilitate healthy living and learning for the 6th-9th grade girls.
The bikes were donated to make room for newer bikes that are part of the Safer Routes To School program and as a pilot program that the BTA and SR2S are considering as a way to build community partnerships and reach the goal of having bicycle and pedestrian safety education in every school in Portland.
This was a unique opportunity to get involved with a great new school and concept and to see how we fit. Judging by the looks on the girls faces when the bikes were dropped off we made the right choice.
