Neighborhood Navigators at Kelly Elementary

“Welcome to the first lesson of Neighborhood Navigators. My name is LeeAnne, and I will be learning with you guys for the next 8 weeks. Please tell me your name and one word that describes yourself.”

“My name is ___, and I am awesome.”

I wish all 4th and 5th graders could describe themselves the way this confident young lady has. I am already impressed with my group of students at Kelly Elementary.

This week I started teaching a new pilot curriculum called Neighborhood Navigators at Kelly during their after school SUN program. The curriculum is focused on health: personal, community, and environmental. The goal of this curriculum is to use neighborhood walks and creative lessons to teach the relationship between healthy eating, active living, and personal and civic responsibility in creating/maintaining/utilizing a healthy community and environment. Phew! Quite a mouthful. I have my work cut out for me. But with a great group of kids, fabulous support from the Community Cycling Center, Growing Gardens, Community Health Partnership, HEAL (healthy eating, active living), and many others, these next 8 weeks will be full of learning and fun. If anyone is interested in volunteering to be an extra set of eyes and ears during this class from 3:30 to 5:30 every Tuesday and Thursday, please contact me at the BTA, leeanne@bta4bikes.org or 503-226-0676 x 26. It is a great way to turn your ideals into tangible accomplishments by using your positive energy to impact the lives of others!
