Give kids a brake! (that means stop for them)

Last Tuesday, at the intersection of North Bryant and Denver at 8:30am, a student crossing guard standing in the pedestrian safety island wearing a reflective vest and holding a crossing guard stop sign had the terrifying experience of having his toes run over by a passing car.img_0658.jpg The car never stopped. Thankfully his injuries were not life threatening. That said, I saw the young man this morning and he is wearing a cast and getting around with crutches–no fun for any high energy kid. Most of the press for this incident centers on the need for adults to chaperon the student crossing guards. However, I believe this misses the point. We should be focusing on the fact that the driver failed to yield the right of way to a very brightly lit pedestrian in a marked crosswalk in a school zone during school hours. The core issue is that we have a motorist who is a danger to the community, not an errant child and most definitely not negligent school administrators.
