Things are happening in Central Point! With a grant from the Carpenter Foundation, the BTA purchased 32 Giant bicycles to be used in Central Point and surrounding communities as part of their commitment to bike safety, health and Safe Routes to School throughout their community.
Officer Lou Fulmer and Sgt. Jeff Britton, supported by Chief Jon Zeliff, are all committed to bicycle safety, education, and the use of bicycles in law enforcement. Using a bicycle allows the officers to interact with citizens and make personal contacts, in a way that would not be possible in cars. They also know the importance of giving youth the opportunity to learn and practice safe riding and bike handling procedures. This has huge dividends as the kids grow up and begin driving or start to ride longer distances.
The 32 bikes will allow local and regional schools to have the BTA’s on-road safety classes provided by the police department with assistance and training from BTA’s instructors, Kat Smith and Egon Dubois.
It was so much fun unloading the bikes at Scenic Middle School, with help from PE teacher Lynn Carrigan, and seeing each bike being taken for a test ride. “When do we get to use these?†was the general question coming from the students. It’s pretty cool seeing so many people come together to make a project happen.
