The Clinton Street Bicycle Boulevard Enhancement Project

One of Portland’s most popular bikeways has been selected by the Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) to become the City’s model bicycle boulevard. As part of an ongoing effort to improve Portland’s network of family-friendly and low-traffic bicycle and pedestrian neighborhood routes, PDOT has launched the Clinton Street Bike Boulevard Enhancement Safety Project. The project aims to clearly communicate to all users of the corridor Clinton Street’s designation as an official City bicycle boulevard, and to improve safety conditions for cyclists along it. As project coordinator Kirsty Hall notes, “Many new cyclists don’t have a clue where to ride if they want to stay off the major arterials, and most motorists don’t have a clue they’re driving on a bike boulevard.”

The project will cover Clinton Street from SE 12th to SE 53rd. Clinton was selected for the project as the city’s most well-established and popular bike boulevard. Little signage currently exists along the corridor to clearly communicate its bicycle designation – particularly to motorists. PDOT will work closely with the local community and the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) to develop a toolbox of on-street markings, signage and other creative streetscape elements for project implementation. If the Clinton Street pilot is successful, the model will be utilized on other City bike boulevards. PDOT plans to hold a series of open houses/design workshops in the neighborhood this spring and summer.
