SW Trails presents final draft of bike routes

The neighborhood group SWTrails has been toiling at the dirt-and-rocks level to build paths and staircases for Southwest Portland residents to walk on; and at the planning level to determine a low- and no-traffic bike network to serve southwest residents, workers and students.

After more than a year of open houses, brainstorming sessions, and exploratory bike rides the local planning for this network is nearly complete.

On Wednesday, June 18th, from 5:30-8:00 pm at the Multnomah Arts Center, the recommendation will get one last vetting with Southwest Portland neighbors before SWTrails turns it into a formal recommendation to City of Portland planning staff.
SWTrails draft recommendation for a complete network
They are on track to recommend “Immediate Actions” that would establish a good, basic system to serve neighborhood centers, as a subset of a more complete recommended system that would rely heavily on low-traffic bike boulevards. Off-street bike paths, uphill shoulders and bike lanes would supplement the low-traffic network.

Take a look at the proposed Immediate Actions and the complete project list.

Big thank you to SW Trails for some great recommendations and a lot of good work done in the last few years for SW bicyclists. It’s exciting to consider that bicycling in SW may get safer and more bicyclists will be out on the roads in the not too distant future!

Echoing Cate… I really hope that SW Trails’ proposed bike network will turn into a reality and then can serve as a model that can be replicated further westward into Beaverton, Tigard and Hillsboro.

Great job. Any thoughts to an online tool that can get you from here to there? Picking the best route can be daunting. Thanks
