Mostly this isn’t “news” to us, but the statistic that 1 million Americans are bike commuters was pretty stunning. After two years of locking to a street sign outside one of my client’s offices, I finally persuaded the building owner to request a bike rack from the city. Portland put in two racks, as usual at no charge to the building owner. Now when I arrive, I find the racks are full – 6 other cyclists usually there before me. So I’m still locking to the same street sign, but I couldn’t be happier about it. I know the more bikes that are parked outside a business, the more implicit encouragement there is for newbies to try cycling to work too.
