If you missed New Belgium’s Tour de Fat under the Hawthorne Bridge this year you missed a great time.
It was hot but then so were the bands. The parade went out and back with “no cycle left behind” and the New Belgium beer was terrific.
Volunteer James Parsons took some great photos of the event.
The art bikes in the corral under the bridge were hilarious.
One of the bikes had a rear wheel with a hub that was not in the center so the back of the bike went up and down as the wheel went around. A tandem had a third wheel in the middle which was bigger than the others so the bike was like a teeter totter. There was the three wheel bike that could only spin around in place. One bike had tennis shoes on the end of very thick spokes.
Perhaps the best part of the art bikes was the look of innocent delight on the faces of the people riding the bikes.
Each year at Tour de Fat, local residents enter a competition to trade their car for a very cool commuter bike. This year Sean Hutchinson won the bike. See his entry video here.
Giving up a car is more complicated and difficult than it sounds especially when it involves kids. Sean will be blogging about his experience and you can follow it here.
BTA staff were at the BTA table most of the day answering questions about all things bikey. Scott Bricker was there gathering signatures in support of the Going St. Bike Boulevard project. We also put up a banner for the Eye to Eye safety campaign.
BTA volunteers showed up to cover all the shifts and the BTA made $5,700.
The Reverend C. Ballyhoo and the New Belgium crew put on a great show and a grand time was had by all.
