Oregon Transportation Safety Conference honors the legislative work of the BTA.

Last week the BTA was honored with a Traffic Safety Award at the Annual Oregon Transportation Safety Awards in the Legislative Action category. Lynne Mutrie accepted this award on behalf of Scott Bricker and the BTA from Troy Costales, Manager, Traffic Safety Division, ODOT, Mark Koberstein, Chair, Oregon Transportation Safety Commission and Tammy Franks, Chair of Board, Alliance for Community Traffic Safety.

The selection committee chose the BTA as the award recipient because of their successful and persistent work to pass Safe Routes to School related laws in 2001, 2005 and 2007. The BTA’s commitment to establishing Safe Routes to School as a legislative priority has promoted a positive climate in Oregon encouraging children to walk and bike to and from school and throughout their communities.

The Oregon Transportation Safety Conference was held in Canyonville in southern Oregon and is an annual event. This year Lynne Mutrie partnered with Shane Rhodes, Safe Routes to School Coordinator for the City of Eugene, to deliver the workshop: Increase Walking and Biking in our Community: Tools and Techniques to Use Today and Throughout the Year. Shane focused on various encouragement programs his schools use in Eugene, including the Freiker Program and its Freikometer.

Lynne presented her draft of the curriculum Neighborhood Navigators. This k-8 curriculum is knowledge and skill- based and addresses the need for introductory and progressive transportation education. Neighborhood Navigators adds to the BTA’s award-winning bicycle and pedestrian safety education curriculums by using the skills learned on the roads and includes lessons on environmental impacts, resource consumption, mapping and advocacy, to name a few.
