Pedestrian Safety Mini-Grant Applications for 2009 are available
Do you live a small town or suburb and enjoy walking, but hesitate because you don’t feel safe? There are resources available for police and sheriff agencies throughout Oregon to improve pedestrian safety.
The BTA/WPC (Willamette Pedestrian Coalition) coordinate ODOT Pedestrian Safety Enforcement grants; the grants provide funds to conduct pedestrian safety enforcement operations. The operations are an important tool to improve understanding of when Oregon law requires motorist to stop for pedestrians.
Twenty-three agencies participated in 2008; they conducted over 120 operations, and over 2,000 individuals received tickets or warnings. Newspaper articles, TV and radio spots about the enforcement operations informed others in the community about the law and their responsibilities as motorists and pedestrians.
Encourage your local enforcement agency to apply for the grant or attend the March 16 training. Applications are due Jan 30. For more information and applications visit the WPC website.
