Navigating the Lents Neighborhood.

“I love Kelly Grow.  It helps me with my Nintendo DS addiction.” -Jose

Three weeks ago, I started teaching an after-school class at Kelly Elementary.  I love it because I get to take long walks with 15  students and lead activities about mapping, walking, transportation, food travel, and other topics.  I also love it because of what Jose said to me last week.

Kelly Grow (KG) is an after school program  that focuses on Healthy Eating and Active Living.  Through a partnership including the BTA, Community Cycling Center (CCC), Growing Gardens, Community Health Partnership, SUN, and Kelly Elementary, students learn bike safety with the CCC’s earn-a-bike program, garden growing with  Growing Garden’s curriculum, and mapping reading and pedestrian safety through the BTA’s KG Neighborhood Navigators curriculum.  This is the 2nd year that all these organizations have come together to integrate lessons with one theme, Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL).

If you are interested in volunteering to help out during a class, please contact me at leeanne@bta4bikes.org, 503.226.0676 x26.  You could go for a walk with us or help with classroom activities. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-5:30, at Kelly Elementary.

“That’s two hours I didn’t spend playing DS,” says a tired Jose after a long walk and a mapping activity.

These are my favorite moments.

I did suggest that he could get rid of the Nintendo DS.  “I would die,” he replied.
