Women in big hats. Dogs tied to gas meters. Little boys in ties. Strollers and tofu scrambles. Sunday morning along NE Alberta Street is a festival of churchgoing and brunching. Rex Burkholder has lived in and represented Northeast Portland for years and this Sunday, March 8th, he’ll be leading a walk for children and their families around the King neighborhood’s quiet residential streets and down bustling Alberta. It’s the first in a month-long series of family walks led by Metro councilors. Organized by the BTA’s Safer Routes to School team, these walks are inspired by Metro’s pocket-sized book Walk There: 50 Treks in and around Portland and Vancouver, an informative guide to neighborhood walks you might never have otherwise considered. Metro does important work that both parents and kids should know about. This is a rare opportunity to go for a walk through a changing neighborhood and talk to that district’s Metro councilor about growth, to discuss transportation while sauntering alongside a working railyard, learn more about habitat preservation in a nature reserve, and ask David Bragdon what his favorite animal at the zoo is.
