New stimulus funds for bike and pedestrian projects

Bicycle and pedestrian projects in Oregon could receive new funding this summer through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program (EECBG). The program, funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), provides $2.7 billion in grants for projects that reduce energy use, fossil fuel emissions, and improve energy efficiency in all sectors, including the “development and implementation of transportation programs to conserve energy.”

Bike and ped projects fit right into the EECBG’s guidelines, which prioritize projects with the longest-term benefits. Construction of bike/ped networks, bike parking facilities, and education and encouragement programs like Safe Routes to School could all be eligible for funding.

The US Department of Energy has allocated $9.6 million to the state of Oregon and more for selected cities and counties, including $5.6 million to Portland and $2.6 million to Washington County. See how much your city and county received or see allocations for the rest of the country. The application deadline for states is May 25, 2009. For cities, the deadline is June 26.
