Not a fad: Low-Car Diet kicks off at City Hall

Thirty Portland residents, including BTA Executive Director Scott Bricker and Mayor Sam Adams, gave up the keys to their personally owned car at today’s Low-Car Diet kickoff event. Participants in Zipcar’s annual month-long challenge agree to walk, bike, take public transit or use Zipcar for when a vehicle is necessary.

Scott Bricker addressed the crowd at City Hall at today’s kickoff event.

Dieters will blog about their experiences on the Low-Car Diet website, and at the end of the month all of the car miles lost – and walking and biking miles gained – will be tallied up.

Last year’s participants recorded a total of 85% more miles walked, 136% more miles bicycled, and 71% less miles driven.
