I love the cows. Relating to animals along my commute is one of the coolest things about being out on a bike. They just keep grazing as cars go by, but a bicyclist is different enough that they often stop and look up at you. That’s when I often smile and say, “Hi, cow”.

This more personal relationship with the real world is a very commonly cited benefit of bike commuting.

What great scenery for your commute each working day!

What a lucky guy! I get to see all the cars passing me by as I ride down Commercial Street SE. Wish I had something this nice to look at on my ride in!

Don, this scene looks familiar to me. This wouldn’t be Oakville Road by chance, would it?

    Oops. I mean Riverside Drive.

I love Riverside Drive! I have a good friend in Corvallis so sometimes I take Amtrak south to Albany ($10 extra to bring my bike), get off and ride the back way there via Riverside Drive.

Never noticed those horns though. Will have to pay more attention next time.

Yes, it’s Riverside Drive. Between Corvallis and Albany. There’s various domestic bovine, equine and avian residents to see along my way. I love ‘em all. I get to hear four roosters crow every morning. If stopped to visit them all, I’d never get to work! I’m also a bird watcher and I take my binos and have seen some good birds. It’s a long ride, sometimes windy, but the sites and sounds are compensation.

It’s cool when the birds fly along with you for a while – extra exhilaration.

I dodged two (live) possums in the dark each of the last two mornings.

I have had deer bounding right alongside me a number of times.

I came up on a red fox once – walking right down (a closed section of) the highway.
