Congratulations to Lofani, 5th grader at Astor K-8 in Portland, for winning this year’s poster contest! Lofani’s artwork will be featured on the official promotional poster for Walk + Bike Day in 2010.
“The Great Walk!”
Lofani, 5th Grade, Astor Elementary
Hundreds of students from all over Oregon submitted drawings this year, making it hard to choose just one. We’d like to recognize two standout submissions below as close runners-up.
“It’s Good for the Eyes”
Layne, 2nd Grade, Central Point Elementary
Anonymous submission
Thanks to all the creative and talented artists who participated in the contest!

Yay! I voted for Lofani’s, myself. The finalists were all really super, but Lofani’s flattened out a receding landscape in a very interesting way, and also I loved that the only empty space on the paper was the clouds, which are stacked so intensely. And that guy’s shorts.
I love the wide variety of hairstyles.
Also, so many activities are taking place within the frame! One guy is wearing basketball shorts, another practicing football, some walking, standing and running, some music-listening, and some tree-climbing, and of course the parked bike (helmet perched delicately on the seat) framed in the setting sun.
You’ll go far, Lofani.
Great artistic analysis, Michelle. I really appreciated, in the second piece, how the application of different mediums (crayon, stickers, collage, 3D art) blend complexity and simplicity in a way that embodies the physical feeling of walking or biking to school. “I see new things” rounds out the tone perfectly.
The piece by “Anonymous,” with its lollipop fields, sugar mountain, and rainbow-powered bicycle, was clearly inspired by the sheer joy and happiness that comes from biking (or walking).
But Lofani’s poster really stole the show. Definitely the favorite here at the BTA.
Lofani is my daughter’s class at Astor! She is an AMAZING artist!! How exciting to have the winner from our school, Astor K-8!!
Astor also had a HUGE turnout for the Bike + Walk to School Day! Bike racks were FULL, lots of people walking in, it was a FUN morning!!
