After several years of planning work, it seemed this summer as though the safety goals of the project might not hold up against some neighbors’ desires to keep on-street parking available out front of their properties. But extensive work by City staff, and comments from Vancouver residents who value safe bicycling facilities, has resulted in their recommendation that the bicycle lanes be continuous.

This is 39th St. today:

On-street car parking will be removed from one side of the street to reduce the high number of side-swipe collisions and to make room for other street improvements. The street will also get aesthetic amenities, sidewalks, curb ramps, rumble strips, radar speed signs and improved pedestrian crossings.

The City expects to have completed final designs next spring, and to begin construction next summer (of 2010). In the meantime, City staff will be meeting with 39th St. residents to work out ways to moderate parking impacts.
