Michelle Poyourow and Roger Geller debate bike funding on KBOO

On Wednesday of this week BTA Advocacy Manager Michelle Poyourow and City of Portland Bicycle Coordinator Roger Geller were interviewed on the monthly KBOO Bike Show.

Bike show hosts Tori Bortman and Sara Stout asked the pair for their perspectives on the draft Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030, which City Council will consider adopting on January 20th; on the levels of bike funding that will (or won’t) get the City to its goal of 25% of trips taken by bike in 2030; and on what sources of funds we should be looking for to start building the Plan.

The show has been archived on Portland Transportlisten to it here.

The Plan lays out a vision for a healthy, livable city where all residents have access to safe and comfortable bike routes and can make short trips by bike.

Yet at present levels of bike funding, the City of Portland could not complete even the first “tier” of bike projects and trails for decades, much less achieve this vision by the sunset of the twenty-year plan in 2030.

Kudos, Michelle. The Bike Plan should reflect the City’s intentions (not just vision) and metrics are critical to success. If Michelle’s remarks reflect the “new” BTA, I’m a committed supporter!
