Safe Sidewalks Campaign honors winter-ready Central Oregon businesses

For several months out of the year, business in Central Oregon battle snow and ice just to maintain walking access on their sidewalks and to their front doors. Many people don’t realize Deschutes County communities, including Bend, Redmond and Sisters, require by code that sidewalks be cleared after a snowstorm.

Imagine shoveling this Washington, DC sidewalk.

Since 2006, the annual Safe Sidewalks Campaign has recognized businesses that have made an extra effort keeping their sidewalks clear of snow and ice in the winter as a way of reminding county business and property owners of their responsibility to maintain clear sidewalks. These codes not only help make sidewalks safer, but encourage the good business practice of making it easier for a customer to arrive at their doors.
