Thursday: Discuss future of bike events on Skyliner Road in Bend

The Deschutes County Commission may impose a limit on the number bicycling events that take place on Skyliner Road in Bend, a popular location for races and time trials. Residents who live along Skyliner Road say the road is dangerously narrow and that bike events make it inconvenient to get to and from their homes.

Attend a public meeting on Thursday to discuss solutions with the Board of County Commissioners, the Deschutes County Bike Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and residents.

Thursday, March 18th, 5:30-7:00 pm
McMenamins Old St Francis School Hotel, 700 Northwest Bond Street
The Smoke Room (maximum seating 20)

According to the Bend Bulletin, some residents are pushing for the County to deny permits for any bike event while others support a cap on the number of event days. Scott Hammers reports:

“Options range from approving all permit requests for events on Skyliners Road to denying all permit requests, Kropp said, with a number of alternatives in between the two extremes. One alternative would set a cap on the total number of event days, with a lottery system to allocate the days to event organizers. Another would grant a permit only every other year to recurring events, such as the Cascade Cycling Classic. A third alternative would limit each event organizer to no more than two daily permits per year.” Read the full article here.

Additional meetings may be held on the following days if necessary:
Monday March 22nd 9 a.m. Location TBD
Tuesday March 30th 9 a.m. location TBD

Once again, people in a town think that us “bikers” don’t pay enough to use the roads that we also pay taxes on. Its difficult to get to your home? Sorry, its a road people. Learn how to SHARE it! They probably don’t complain about runners/walkers with Dogs or people on horses. Nope they focus solely on just one group, the group who aren’t obese and abuse the health care system, that contribute to making their city a destination for recreation, and help keep Bend alive in the summers.

Do they even realize the small impact that one group makes? I mean really, you get slowed down out there 5-10 days a year. That is such a SMALL percentage of the time. Get over your greedy selves and SHARE THE ROAD!
