Take the Beaverton Bike Month Challenge this May

Beaverton Mayor Dennis Doyle recently declared May as Bike Month!

In the spirit of Bike Month, and on behalf of the Beaverton Bicycle Advisory Committee, Barbara Chapnick (a 2010 Alice Award nominee) has challenged residents to take the following actions to demonstrate the community’s commitment to promoting bicycling.

To the City of Beaverton Staff:

- Bike to work one day a week or bike to a co-workers house and then carpool.

- For city departments, create a motor pool where bicycles are used instead of cars to complete a city task such as checking traffic lights.

To Local Businesses:

- Install more bike racks in front of stores, making it easier for bicyclists to shop at those businesses. Ten bikes can park in the space taken up by a single motor vehicle, increasing parking capacity for customers ten fold.

To all Beaverton local residents:

- Use a bike to do one errand this month.

The BTA is happy to see the Bike Advisory Committee actively encouraging the City of Beaverton and Beaverton residents to take make small steps that lead to big changes. Go Beaverton Bike Advisory Committee!

Great challenge. I’ll try to bike to one errand a month. First, i
need to buy or rent a bike!

I agree with Judy that it’s a terrific challenge.

I’m just trying to figure out how to do an errand since I live in the hills and it’s a mile uphill to a flat surface.

But Judy, I DO have a bike….maybe I should give my bike to you!!! Because it sounds like you live in a flat area…and could ride to the local market or coffee place!

I’ll take the bike, but will have to add a third wheel or training wheels at this point in my life, given balance issues and fear
    of falling! Well, maybe not!
