Our favorite biking family and 2012 Alice Award winners the von Borgs were recently featured (again) in the Oregonian! The seven member family runs a nonprofit delivery program called Wheel Solutions. Every Wednesday, the family loads up Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares at the Tanasbourne Farmers Market and distributes to people in neighboring apartment complexes.
Utilizing grants and individual donations, the van Borgs got their start with two trailers custom made by the Hillsboro Bike Company.
Wheel Solutions targets residents in Hillsboro. Interested residents sign up for a weekly supply of seasonal produce purchased directly from local farms. Partner farms include Artisan Organics in Hillsboro and Dairy Creek Farm and Produce near Banks.
Delivery is currently free, but Annee von Borg hopes to expand the program enough to provide employment and to create a sponsorship or fee system in the future, while keeping deliveries free for seniors and mobility-impaired residents.
In the Oregonian article, Moses von Borg said the family is dedicated to helping people lead healthier lives.
“‘You really become a nutrition concierge for people because they are busy,’ he said. ‘We’re not doing this for the glory or the money — we’re doing it so you can eat.’”
