In 2012, Portland has reclaimed the title of “Best Bike City in America,” continuing its love affair with all things cycling. So it’s no surprise that ARTCRANK, billed as “A poster party for bike people,” is pulling into town for an unprecedented three-day run at The Cleaners, the gallery space operated by The Ace Hotel, from Thursday October 4 through Saturday, October 6.
ARTCRANK Portland will feature hand-made, bike-inspired posters created by 33 artists from The Rose City. Admission is free, and limited edition, signed and numbered copies of all posters will be available for $40 each.
Where you find bikes, you’re sure to find beer, and ARTCRANK Portland is no exception. At the show, a selection of craft beers by Portland’s own Widmer Brothers Brewing will be available in exclusive ARTCRANK pint glasses, with proceeds going to support Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA). BTA promotes bicycling and improves bicycling conditions in Oregon, creating communities where people can meet their daily transportation needs on a bike.
BTA will team up with Clif Bar to provide bike parking to those who arrive at Thursday’s opening night party on two wheels. And all proceeds from the sale of the ARTCRANK Portland show poster by will benefit BTA as well, thanks to a contribution by Neenah Paper.
“This is our fourth show in Portland, and it’s always fun to show off bike posters created by local artists in the city that literally runs on bikes,” says ARTCRANK Founder and Creative Director Charles Youel. “Every city we visit has its own sense of style around cycling, but we always see incredibly imaginative, inspired work from Portland. I think the creative community here feels the same pressure we do to deliver something spectacular, and they always come through.”
ARTCRANK is on a mission to make art and bikes more accessible across the U.S. and beyond, a journey that’s taken Youel and his partners from Minneapolis to Denver, San Francisco, Austin, New York and even London. “Riding a bike is a form of creative expression,” says Youel. “Even if you ride the same streets every day, the experience is always different. I’m amazed by the way people channel that sense of freedom and possibility into poster designs, and I can’t wait to see what our Portland artists come up with.”
