I encounter lots of critters, too, and love that aspect of bike commuting (and hate that motorized traffic is so brutal).

I spooked deer away from the road edge *twice* last week.

Yesterday morning in the dark I saw *something* light colored and low to the ground moving across the road. As I got close enough for the spill from my headlight, I could just make out a much larger, darker silhouette. It was *big*. Moved like a wild animal. Could have been a raccoon, I guess; but if so, it was either the biggest one I ever saw, or a trick of the light.

This morning I passed a pair of chickens trying to get up the nerve to cross the road.
