With 246 registered riders in the first race of the season BTA Kid’s ‘Cross is definitely back in action, and once again, the largest field of the day! The sun was shining, the smiles were gleaming and the excitement was infectious.
Something different this year is that the Juniors category has grown so much they now have their own category. I credit the success of the Cross Crusade and the BTA in making this the best place for kids to race bikes in America! Thank you to everyone for helping us share our awesome time slot with them as they take that next step and challenge themselves to 30 minutes of radness.
Kid’s ‘Cross racers line up at last year’s biggest race.
BTA Kid’s ‘Cross will feature two levels of racing and two course lengths for kid’s aged 2-12 years. The older kids, Cat ‘A’ will do a longer, more technical course while the younger Cat ‘B’ will ride a shorter course usually separated from the main course. All racing is free though a waiver is needed. A couple of changes to the format this year will make things flow more smoothly:
-Everyone gets an Official BTA-KX number of their own!
-No more ribbons at the finish line. When you register for your race you get an official “Raced” sticker to put on your number. Collect all 8!
-Parents need to check their kids in at every race to get a sticker and confirm participation. Registration closes at 12:10pm.
-We will have some new Cat ‘B’ courses for the youngest and newest riders. This may mean two start lines. Details available at check in each day.
We have awesome t-shirts for sale this year! Sizes 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12 from American Apparel. $15 each and available at all Cross Crusade races.
Local brand Speedvagen, who produce high-quality, hand built race machines, will lend some giddy up to the series this year with a fresh look and volunteer support.
Portland Design Works (PDW) saw what a blast the kids were having last year and jumped in the ring to support it. “Anything we can do to make Cross racing fun for kids, and enjoyable for families is icing on the cake!” says Dan Powell, co-owner at PDW.
Car-share pioneer Zipcar is lending in-kind transportation support in 2012.
