Portland firm, iconic US companies added to list of Bike Friendly Businesses

The League of American Bicyclists recently announced 71 additions to their list of Bicycle Friendly Businesses (BFB) across the United States. Businesses new to the list include household names like Facebook, Apple, and Hewlett-Packard as well as Portland-based planning and engineering firm Kittelson & Associates, Inc.

Efforts by these companies have a positive impact not just on employees but on surrounding communities.

Jessica Herrera, Facebook’s Transportation Manager, was quoted by the League saying, “Over the years, [Facebook has] focused on providing sustainable, green transportation alternatives to our employees, as well as helping our local neighborhood do the same.

Herrera pointed to Facebook’s gift of bicycles to employees and the company’s push to have safety improvements made on public roads near their campus.

The previous update from the League added 63 businesses to the growing BFB list including Portland businesses LifeCycle Adventures and Galois.

The full list of Bicycle Friendly Businesses (PDF) includes many other local names: Platinum-designated Alta Planning + Design and Bike Gallery; Gold designation for Chris King and OHSU; and recognition of eighteen other companies Portland.

Bicycle Friendly Businesses are added to the list biannually in the spring and fall. If you know of a business that should be on the list, you can submit an application for the Bicycle Friendly Business program online. Applications must be received by January 11th to be considered for the Spring 2013 update.
