Before Portland was recognized for being a roots music hot spot in America, Jackstraw was working hard to put Portland on the map by building a foundation for the roots community through their hard-worn picking and lonesome harmonies.  Inspired but not only the grey rainy climate of the forested Northwest, but also by southern tradition, Jackstraw has proved to be one of the Northwest’s best bluegrass bands.

Often referred to as “northwest mountain music,” Jackstraw’s tunes have been entertaining the country since 1997 when rhythm guitarist Darrin Craig and lead player Jon Neufeld met mandolin picker David Pugh and Bassist Jesse Withers at a Portland guitar store, Artichoke music. As they say, the rest was history. Sixteen years later the band has six records and has toured throughout the United States.

In addition to participating in Jackstraw, members of the band are involved in Portland’s local music scene. Guitarist Jon Neufeld plays in the Decemberist’s acoustic side project, Black Prairie, and Darrin Craig, David Pugh and Jesse Withers all play with highly regarded bands.

Unknown-1Bluegrass is redefined through their cutting edge take on the classic sound which they have been developing for years on tour across the country. “This is bluegrass that belongs in a dusty honky-tonk, country twang as rooted in Bill Monroe as George Jones, an old-timey sound for a new age.”
