Interview with Matt Goldstein, Duniway Elementary Principal

Matt Goldstein is the Principal at Duniway Elementary and has been such a wonderful supporter of his students learning bike and pedestrian safety. Thanks, Matt, for all of your great energy!

What brought you to be the principal at Duniway?

After being an Assistant Principal for three years I became Duniway’s principal in June of 2013. It has been an amazing first few months.btaphoto

Describe what it was like riding with the kids last fall.

It was great to be a part of the group. I really enjoyed watching the kids ride confidently and safely, while having lots of fun.

How do you think Bike Safety Education impacts your school?

We have a huge number of kids who ride their bicycles throughout the neighborhood and to/from school. The bike safety program is a perfect opportunity for our students to learn critical skills that will serve them well on their ride to school tomorrow and well into the future.

What are some challenges to incorporating Bike Safety Education into the school day?

Well of course time is always precious and finding time in our already busy day can be challenging. Our fifth grade teachers do a fantastic job of being flexible with their schedules and as a staff and community we value learning opportunities of all varieties. The bike safety class was a really nice way to start the year – it gave our students an opportunity to get to know one another and come together as a community.

Would you recommend Bike Safety Education to other schools and why?

I would definitely recommend the program to other schools. Students, families, and teachers all had only positive things to say about the program. It provided our students with critical bike safety skills in a fun, active, and safe environment. The staff were organized and clearly passionate about biking and the importance of bike safety.

What are your three favorite things about your school and students?

Our students are excited to learn, our parent community values critical thinking skills and educating the whole child, and everyone believes that Duniway is a great place to be!
